Countdown To Dry January

Dry January.  Sounds straight-forward.  But we’ve been doing it WITHOUT AN APP!!  How insane!  Here’s an app from the land of London Dry Gin called Alcohol Change UK.  And it’s free!  One feature tells us how much money and calories we’re saving.  And theirs badges to celebrate progress!!  What more could we ask for.  Seriously, fitness apps and such really do help.  So we’re going to try it!  Until then, Cheers!!

The Brady Bunch House Is Back On The Market!!

Per People magazine, the iconic Brady Bunch home in L.A.—which HGTV bought for $3.5 million in 2018 and turned into a replica of the classic show’s set on A Very Brady Renovation—is back on the market for $5.5 million.

Boosting Memory

Not getting enough flavanols — natural compounds found in fruits, vegetables and even chocolate — could be driving that age-related memory loss, according to U.S. News.  “This is the first time we can conclude that flavanols are acting as a nutrient for the aging brain,” said Dr. Scott Small, a professor of neurology and director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.  Besides berries and dark chocolate, other flavanol-containing foods include apples — particularly the peels — grapes, citrus fruits, cocoa and green tea. Good vegetable sources of flavanols are onions, hot peppers, kale, broccoli, rutabagas and spinach, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“I believe that you could consume enough flavanols to prevent yourself from being deficient,” Small said. However, he urged people not to focus on getting this nutrient through chocolate.

“There’s no way you can eat enough chocolate to have this benefit. In fact, if you tried, you would die first,” Small said.

M*A*S*H Martini

On this day in 1983, the last episode of M*A*S*H aired and was watched by about 106 million people.  Hawkeye and Trapper often enjoyed a martini made from their still but occasionally they went out for a drink.

Vanishing Waiters

With the effects of Covid, drive-through fast-food, and now automation reducing staff at sit-down restaurants, true professional waiters and waitresses are getting harder to find.  If you can find an experienced, professional at a steakhouse or even a traditional diner, savor the experience.  

Wine self-service machines are a trending thing. Why have servers at all?  We’ll all just get up from the table and get our meal out of a machine when our phone notifies us.

There is nothing like a professional guiding your dining experience.  Enjoy it and appreciate it whenever you can.

Daily Habits of happiness experts

Isn’t that what the Buzz is all about?  Wanting to feel happy?  Is there a healthy shortcut… cutting out the sex, drugs and rock ’n roll middleman?  “Experts” have some suggestions.  Here’s a snapshot.  Click here for the entire article in Time.  “The more you notice how happy or how grateful you are, the more it grows. Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy many things that contribute mightily, such as exciting experiences. Spending money on others is also linked to happiness. Still, many of the most reliable ways to increase happiness levels are free, like meditating and practicing compassion, gratitude, and altruism.  Spending time with family outside of the house, and with friends in a non-professional setting, were big ones: the majority did both at least once a week, and many gathered socially three to four times a week. Pursuing hobbies, such as art, music, cooking, or reading, was also universally important.  Mental well-being has long been linked to sufficient sleep, and our respondents prioritized getting at least seven hours a night. Exercising or playing sports was another shared habit, with respondents saying they fit it in three to six times weekly.”

Seems like a lot of work.  Nap time.

AARP reports that Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer, got mad at scammers and thieves.  Scammers often target seniors.  Now he is getting even in creative ways.  For example, “The smash-and-grab thieves who are breaking car windows and stealing from the vehicles.  Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s really bad.  I’ll be working potentially with some law enforcement.  There will be a very uncharitable amount of fart spray involved.”
