Walking in a heated wonderland

Walking is good for us.  We’ve gone on and on about it many times.  Yet for many of us it’s freakin’ cold out right now.  As Men’s Health says, “The colder it gets, the more insulation you need to stay safe and comfortable, but walking around with 4-5 different garments on your upper body is about as enjoyable as it sounds. Our solution? Cut down on the bulk by adding a heated jacket into the mix.  There’s nothing quite as luxurious as wearing heated gear in the winter. Throwing one of these winter jackets on is like having a hand warmer (or heated sock) for your entire body, and yes, that’s as nice as it sounds.”

Bowl Mania Beverages

We were looking for a cocktail to enjoy during one of the 437 college bowl games this holiday season and we came across the Hail Mary in pastemagazine.com.  What was intriguing about the recipe was some of the ingredients for their Voluptuous Mix.  Now whether you’re making your own bloody mix or just tarting-up a store-bought mix, consider including these ingredients:

  • Lemon juice
  • Lime Juice
  • Horseradish
  • Hot sauce
  • Pickle brine
  • Chopped peeled cucumber (run through food processor)

Here’s the link to the Hail Mary recipe plus some other football-themed cocktails including the Boozy Blitz and Tailgate Tea.

Boxing Day

Midnightmixologist.com knows that “bourbon and citrus make the perfect holiday blend.  Boxing Day is an easy going cocktail that keeps a party going and can be sipped over a long evening.  The blood orange and lemon are a perfect balance to the sweet of the Bourbon and simple syrup.  This could easily turn into a year around favorite.”

We agree!

Mix in a shaker with ice, pour into a glass and enjoy. Garnish with with orange or lemon peel.

Jingle Bell Rock Robbery

In a not-so-surprising tale, Jingle Bell Rock singer/songwriter Bobby Helms never received royalties for penning the Christmas classic in 1957.  So reports the Los Angeles Times about the song streamed over 600 million times on Spotify. In the following years, many more rock musicians found that the music industry didn’t always play fair, to say the least.

“Have a Cigar” – Pink Floyd

“Well, I’ve always had a deep respect, and I mean that most sincerely

The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think

Oh by the way, which one’s Pink?”

More-Better Coffee

We’ve written about the health benefits of coffee. Yet apparently there’s a trend toward making coffee even more healthy. Coffeeaffection.com reports this, “Health-conscious food and beverages have long been a trend in popular culture, and coffee, as one of the most consumed beverages, is not immune. Brands like Purity Coffee are putting antioxidants and other health boosting nutrients first in their production and marketing efforts. Some brands are going a step further by adding additional ingredients to increase the health benefits. What’s more, coffee shops are featuring coffee alternatives like matcha lattes, as well.”

We feel better already!

Snowshoe

How does a snowman get to work? By icicle.

You would think that’s really funny if you’d had a couple of Snowshoe cocktails. That’s half bourbon and half peppermint schnapps. That’s it.

Scrooge’s Go-to holiday drink

That would be the Smoking Bishop. Essentially it’s an orange and clove-spiked mulled port. What’s important about the bowl of Bishop is that the punch bowl is like the communal well. Nice for the holidays. Also important from English history is that you would get drunk and laugh at the church at the same time. For more on the history and the recipe for you Scrooge fans, read more from Tori Avey here.

Rhum Agricole

We love folks who are passionate about their work, particularly when it involves distilling spirits like rum.  We recently enjoyed a Three Dogs and a Cat cocktail at Monkeypod that used Kuleana Nanea Rum as one of its ingredients.  Kuleana makes rhum agricola.

Rhum agricole is the French term for sugarcane juicerum, a style of rum originally distilled in the French Caribbean islands from freshly squeezed sugarcane juice rather than molasses.

With the closure of Hawaii‘s crystalline sugar producing mills, some artisanal distilleries have opened which continue production of cane for rhum agricole.  Thanks Wikipedia.

Kuleana Rum Works was born on the island of Hawai’i in 2013 to make and share exquisite rum while creating a thriving local business that celebrates the richness of Hawai’i.  They aim to elevate rum by celebrating it as a world-class spirit.  They do this by making rum from the best ingredients on Earth and without added sweeteners, flavors, or coloring.  Read the whole story here and then give non-molasses rhum agricole a try.

An Hour in the shower

Men’s Health assures us that singing along to a waterproof Bluetooth speaker in the shower will transform our lives.  They recommend 10 of the best in this article.  They also remind us not to bring a corded stereo into the shower.  Sound advice.
