We were curious as to what the Interweb would offer up for an October cocktail we found several Black Old Fashioned’s. We picked the Black Barrel Old Fashioned from Cleveland Whiskey that tied in cold brew, tailgates, high-end cherries. Can’t go wrong with that.
Not the bad ones. Good luck, Florida. You may need to swill a good Hurricane on higher ground to calm the nerves.
Located in the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter, Pat O’Brien’s is a prime destination for tourists who may not know its past as a popular speakeasy. That’s according to New Orleans Historical. Pat O’Brien’s signature drink, the Hurricane, was invented in the 1940’s during World War II when manufacturing replaced distilleries, making whiskey scarce. To obtain a single case of whiskey, bar owners would have to order 50 cases of rum. The abundance of rum inspired employees at Pat O’s to create a new cocktail, and the Hurricane, a rum-based drink, was born.
Although the Pat O’Brien’s recipe remains a secret, here’s a close match:
A traditional hurricane includes: -2 oz. light rum -2 oz. dark rum -2 oz. passion fruit juice -1 oz. orange juice -1/2 oz. fresh lime juice -1 tbsp. simple syrup -1 tbsp. grenadine – an orange slice and cherry to garnish.
Made from scratch, your Hurricane will likely surpass most of the touristy pre-mix versions in the French Quarter.
Our informants tell us the the Margarita, Martini, and Old Fashioned are the most popular cocktails in many of the 50 states. Nothing wrong with sticking to a few classics.
What we meant was… eat your way to younger. Men’s Health has a nice summary of what to eat and how much of it to boost your health. It’s worth reading. Click here.
Peet’s Coffee is helping us celebrate National Coffee Day on September 29th by introducing concentrated coffee. While we weren’t sure we needed anything more concentrated than espresso, the bit below about an “indulgent espresso martini” did catch our eye.
“Ultra Coffee is crafted from Peet’s boldest and most versatile blend, Espresso Forte, and is the perfect addition to any beverage — whether it’s hot, iced, or even sparkling. For those feeling adventurous, add a splash of Ultra Coffee to craft an indulgent espresso martini, whip up a java-forward crumbly coffee cake, or spruce up an everyday latte.”
This may be just what we need for Monday mornings.
This goes out to local musician The Savage. And not because it’s from AARP. Well, that’s part of it as he is no longer a spring chicken. Anyway, AARP has an article about music’s impact on brain health. In their report, “listening to and making music… can enhance a sense of well-being, reduce stress, facilitate interpersonal connections, modulate the cardiovascular system, improve balance and boost the immune system.” Seems like a good start.
BuzzFeed shared some Boomer phrases that we are apparently known to employ. Here are a few that we need to renew if we’ve stopped using them. They’re what make us Buzzed Boomers uniquely us.
“So, what’s the damage” when you get the check at a restaurant.
“I’m videoing this.”
Saying “Lemme ask you something” before asking a question.
The phrase “That’s the million dollar question.”
Saying “pot” instead of “weed.”
The phrase “I guess you hated it” when someone finishes their meal.
Saying you’re going to “zap” something when you microwave it.
We just hit our first tailgate of the new football season with excitement and anticipation…. Because nothing says ‘I love my team’ like getting drunk in a parking lot!!
With politics in the airwaves and lighting up our phones, we went to Washingtonian.com to check out political cocktails over the years. There are 13 from which to choose including The Nixon, the Biden Shot, and the F___ Trump Punch. We’re highlighting the Clinton Martini given his recent speech to the DNC.
“Restaurateur Alan Popovsky doesn’t remember which came first—the Clinton staffers or the Clinton martini. Either way, his former Adams Morgan hot spot, Felix, served the $3 Absolut vodka special to a young White House crew who spilled in every Wednesday night for the live Sinatra covers. “It was always a little dirty,” Popovsky says—of the martinis.”
AARP has an article about Baby Boomer playlists that may surprise you. Boomers are voracious consumers of new, cutting edge music. Not really. Apparently there IS a bit of Drake, Beyonce, Post Malone and Taylor Swift but for the most part we’re mired in the music on which we grew up… Beatles, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, and The Boss. But, hey, thanks to those of you stepping out a bit and updating our image.
Happy 79th birthday to Steve Martin! Is there anything this guy hasn’t done? Stand-up, movies, TV, magic, bluegrass albums, books, plays, Tony’s, Emmy’s, an honorary Oscar….King Tut!
Scientists, in their white coats and holding test tubes, have made a discovery that could dramatically slow the aging process. It involves an antibody treatment against a naughty protein, IL-11, that likely causes inflammation, particularly as we age. Unfortunately it is not currently available for human use. Rats! But it does work in mice! So if you know any mice….
Meanwhile, an anti-inflammatory diet, getting regular sun exposure to optimize vitamin D production, and engaging in consistent exercise can reduce inflammation. The diet…. the usual fruits, veggies, oily fish, nuts, seeds, whole grains and legumes. Bacon is conspicuously missing from this list.
John Mayall and Jerry Miller both passed away recently. Mayall, famous for his British blues and claiming band members such as Eric Clapton, had retired from performing a couple years ago. We just saw Jerry Miller perform in celebration of his 81st birthday. He was a founding member of Moby Grape, one of the great Bay Area bands of the 60’s. Rest In Peace.
