Drynuary

Some Buzzed Boomers are trying Dry January or moderating their drinking this month.  Some are amping up the exercise endorphins while trying to shed those holiday pounds.  Some are exploring their cannabis options.  And some are just sticking to that delicious cup of coffee or tea in the morning.

Whatever your path, whether a cocktail, a latte, a cannabis drink, or cold water after a good workout…. Savor the the beverage!

Happy New Year!

Fear of flying

We are old enough to remember when fear of flying meant there was a reasonable chance of crashing.  Flying through the weather, rather than over it.  Piston engines vibrating our body to its core.  Loud.  Navigation without GPS meant finding the airport wasn’t a given.

Today we fear delayed and cancelled flights, zero legroom, circulating viruses, crying babies ,and fellow passengers getting in fist fights.  And a booze cart that may only make one trip down the aisle in a five hour flight.

Safe travels.

Holiday Manhattan In Manhattan

Or wherever you are, it’s that time of year. Costco shared a recipe for a Holiday Manhattan to promote their Kirkland Tennessee Whiskey. While we don’t doubt their hooch is pretty good we’re using good ol’ Jack Daniel’s No. 7  Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey.

  • 5 dashes of bitters [for a festive flair, try using chocolate or cocoa bitters (neither of which we have)]

  • 1/2 oz cranberry juice

  • 1/2 oz cherry syrup (we like the syrup from a jar of Luxardo Marischino Cherries)

  • s2 oz Tennessee Whiskey

  • 1/2 oz sweet vermouth

They say stir with ice and strain. We prefer to shake in shaker with ice and pour into a chilled martini glass. Your choice.

Happy Holidays!

Quick Stick Fix

We’re scrambling, as usual, to prep for the holidays. No time to make the fancy holiday drinks we’re always yammering about. So here’s a quick fix. Drop one of these Williams Sonoma chocolate peppermint stick rolled wafer things in whatever you’re drinking and you’ll immediately be in the holiday spirit! That’s a tip kids. Write it down.

Wickedly Sour and Crazy Spicy

Kimchi, a staple food in Korean cuisine, is a traditional side dish of salted and fermented vegetables, such as napa cabbage and Korean radish, made with a widely varying selection of seasonings, including gochugaru, spring onions, garlic, ginger, and jeotgal, etc. Wickedly sour and crazy spicy, it can be pungent enough to clear a room. It’s one of those things we don’t get at home, like Eggs Benedict and also, well, let’s leave it at that. But on vacation….. in a Bloody Mary!! Couldn’t resist.

Buzzed Boomer Jet 737

Having recently experienced the challenges of flying on commercial airliners, Buzzed Boomer management has decided to order a Boeing Business Jet which will be re-designated the Buzzed Boomer Jet. Enough of the cramped lavatories, lack of legroom, limited food options, and seats that barely recline. The new BBJ will have a queen sized bed, showers, club seats, a nicely stocked galley/bar, a roomy lav, and a proper table at which to eat and conduct “business”.

Financing and operating expenses remain a concern but those issues are for another day.

Tropical Salvation

We’ve been sucking down tropical drinks for about a week now. We don’t recommend consuming that many alcoholic beverages but we’re not stopping either. And all the sordid news from back home goes down easier with a sugary cocktail.

Just when we start to lament the sorry state of humanity, we meet Rachael and Andrew in the community hot tub. Both are young aerospace engineers who, given time and coordination with their peers, will solve the problems we retired folks helped create. So rest easy. Our problems will be solved. We encouraged Andrew and Rachael to get on a plane and go back to work! Now, where’s my Mai Tai?!

Older Driver Safety Awareness Week

National Day Calendar reminds us this week that older drivers are more prone to accidents than younger drivers. We know some older drivers. We are one. So here’s some tips and Buzzed Boomers should pay particular attention to not mixing the Buzz with driving. Be safe.

  • Obey all traffic rules
  • Never drive in inclement weather
  • Avoid driving at night if possible
  • Never drink and drive
  • Plan the route in advance
  • Get vision checked at least once a year

Say Cheese!

We like cheese. The holidays offer a good excuse to eat more of it.

Thanks to Costco Connection magazine we are going to impress our friends with pairings suggested by Costco cheese suppliers. Get out the wine and beer!

Fresh goat cheese: sauvignon blanc, a citrusy Belgian beer, or a crisp dry cider

Brie: Beaujolais, chardonnay or wheat beer

Jarlsberg: Beaujolais, chardonnay and most styles of beer

Cheddar: Barbaresco, sauvignon blanc and red beer

Stilton: vintage port

Go forth and pair!

Fresh Cranberry Concoction

Back to work after enjoying Buzzed Boomer’s generous vacation benefit we need to use up those leftover fresh cranberries. Not to worry. First we’ll boil the berries for about twenty minutes until they pop. Then we will strain out the juice. A little gin, a little more gin, or vodka, add some lemon juice, and simple syrup added to your shaker and slosh it with ice. Pour into a cocktail glass and toss in a few of those cranberries that you didn’t boil. And maybe a little mint to add some seasonal color. Voila!

Rockin’ Nashville

Having had occasion to visit Nashville recently, we’re always curious which rock musicians have joined their country counterparts in taking up residence there.  Artists such as Billy Gibbons, Peter Frampton, Dave Mustaine, Steven Tyler, Brad Whitford, Tommy Shaw, Kip Winger, Bret Michaels, Kid Rock, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Tom Keifer, Tom Petersson, to name a handful make their home there.

While in Nashville, we also happened to read about the 50th Anniversary of George Harrison’s epic triple album All Things Must Pass.  Sound & Vision magazine noted that one of the musicians on the album was Nashville pedal steel guitar legend Pete Drake.  Small world except when you’re looking for the real pros, go to Nashville.

Apparently We’re Not Paying attention

Killing time at an airport coffee bar, we grabbed a can of Tequila Margarita by Cutwater from the cooler. And guess what? It has real tequila in it. We had thought those cans were all wine coolers or malt liquor drinks. But it was real tequila and it certainly hit the spot after a long flight. And only $9.00 airport prices. Worth it though.
