The Ventures

Guitar World has reported that, “Don Wilson, co-founding rhythm guitarist of instrumental rock outfit The Ventures, has died aged 88.  A trailblazing instrumental rock group, The Ventures sold a staggering 100-million records during their decades-long tenure.

The band was formed in 1958 by Don Wilson and guitarist/bassist Bob Bogle, both construction workers at the time. Drummer Howie Johnson and guitarist Nokie Edwards joined shortly thereafter. While the group remains active to this day, Don Wilson was the last surviving founding member.

The Ventures enjoyed a string of hits, most notably including 1960’s Walk, Don’t Run. The track – which was originally written by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954, and later adapted and re-recorded by Chet Atkins in 1956 – was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2006 for its “lasting impact” on music.

The band’s other notable tracks include Wipeout, Perfidia and their cover of the Hawaii Five-0 theme song by Morton Stevens. The Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 by Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty.

Additionally, the band had a partnership with American guitar maker Mosrite, which yielded the brand’s flagship Ventures model. This electric guitar later grew to become revered in surf and punk circles, and remains a sought-after instrument to this day – Johnny Ramone’s Ventures II model sold at auction for $937,500 last year.”

Cannabis COVID Buzz Saw?

Two compounds isolated from hemp varieties of Cannabis sativa can block the COVID-19 virus from entering human cells, according to a new study led by Oregon State University researchers. The compounds have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection as a complement to vaccines. These cannabinoid acids are not controlled substances like THC and they have a good safety profile in humans.

So this is all about lab tests and is a long way off from being a legitimate treatment. Meanwhile, we can’t wait to see how some folks will run with this like the folks who tried hydrocloroquine or bleach and other unproven/dangerous treatments. We may finally see a Cannabis overdose.

the only way to fly

A recent article reminded us that infamous hijacker D.B. Copper ordered a cocktail or two before he parachuted with $200,000 from a 727 over Washington State back on November 24, 1971.  Was that cocktail:

A. Dry vodka Martini

B. Champagne in a glass slipper (in-flight service was pretty nice back in 1971)

C. Bourbon and soda

D. No cocktails served due to flu pandemic

E.  D.B. Cooper Cocktail (Columbia River water garnished with tree bark)

If you answered ,B you would be correct.  Champagne, cigarettes, and calling the “stewardess” “sweetheart”, were all part of the $20 ticket.

“Boomer” Buzz

When the United States wants to remind not-so-friendly neighbors not to be messin’, we’ll have “boomers” like the USS Nevada pop up from the depths and create a little Buzz. This one surfaced in Guam.

Packing a serious nuclear warhead punch, subs like these are usually hiding out deep in one of the oceans as a deterrent to attack on the US or our allies. Each sub carries 24 missiles, each with multiple independently targetable nuclear warheads…. possibly eight or more. Luckily, in the 6o or so years subs like these have been patrolling the depths, we haven’t had to use them. Thank you for your service!

2022 Fitness Trends

With Covid still circling the globe, keeping fit continues to present challenges. Gyms closed, some reopened, some closed again. As a result, home fitness got a huge boost. Some gyms have gone hybrid offering both in-person classes and online classes. And of course Peloton and others offer robust online classes. So what are the trends?

Well, according to some, wearable fitness trackers lead the 2022 fitness trends. The ability to track distances, heart rate, calories, and more on one’s wrist adds interest and motivation.

Next, home gyms. No surprise there, with gyms closing and some folks choosing not to go back to indoor gyms with Covid still festering.

Outdoor activities are next. Walking, yard work, pickle ball, and dodging floating Covid viruses are some of the obvious alternatives to staying fit indoors.

Next is strength training. Building muscle mass burns calories and tailors that beach bod and more people are discovering the positives strength training offers.

Oh, there’s more trends and we will continue to review and report. In the meantime, start your workout timer on the fitness watch, step outside to your outdoor home gym, and start pumping that iron!

High on Coffee and Associated deep thoughts

We made some Koffi brand coffee in the French press this morning. It brought us back to sitting outside the Koffi cafe in Palm Springs sipping that first cup of coffee on a beautiful Palm Springs day. “Gee, that’s a great cup of coffee!” Or is it!!?? Maybe it’s just being on vacation and enjoying a lovely morning with friends that makes the coffee taste so good. (Koffi Corporation, please send some complimentary coffee for further evaluation.).

The same thing with weed. Is it nature, and the careful cultivation of a particular strain, or nurture where our high is very dependent on our mood, environment, preconceived notions, and clever weed marketing?

The same thing with fine wine. Is it the wine or is it the food, friends, atmosphere and the wine label?

Who cares? If it’s good, enjoy it. That’s our Deep Thoughts for today. Just one more cup.

Sunshine When You Need It most

Winter for many of us is dark and cold and wet. Which wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t so windy.

So how about a little sunshine to brighten a wintery day? Two words. Mango Mojito!

While transporting you to the tropics, it’s also a superfood packed with fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. Need we say more?!

There are numerous recipes online with tips on how to make your own mango puree. This recipe will get you started but remember there is always room for creativity and personal preference.

Mango Mojito

  • 12 fresh lime wedges
  • 3 oz club soda
  • 1 1/2 oz triple sec

dive Bar Anthems

We’ve been known to yammer-on about missing listening to an entire album, or at least one side of the LP.  We still do it yet there’s certainly something to be said for playlists.  We just noticed Apple Music has one called Dive Bar.  American Girl, Back in Black, Folsom Prison Blues,  I Love Rock ’N Roll, etc.  Gets those endorphins going without any help.   With good, solid  Rock ’N Roll we can do without the Sex and Drugs.

The Hunt for Happiness Week

That’s right Baby Boomers.  Next week is Hunt for Happiness Week, according to National Day Calendar.  Here’s their tips to help with the hunt:

  • Who are the people in your life that bring you happiness? Seeing them might bring you joy.
  • When you walk into work, do you feel surrounded by supportive peers? At the end of the day, you may feel satisfied with a job well done.
  • Have you experienced a sense of peace when meditating or praying? A spiritual connection is often an essential part of overall happiness.
  • Taking care of your health and connecting to the outdoors improves your physical wellbeing. It allows us to be independent and be an asset to others.
  • Develop community connections and social activities that broaden your horizons.
  • Identify your favorite activities and pursue them more often.
  • Review your finances. While money doesn’t buy happiness, managing the money we do make well does helps us to create security in our lives.

Hmmmm.  Nothing about catching a mellow Buzz to bring us joy.  Maybe that’s the fourth week of January.

Auto Buzz

We enjoy watching the classic and exotic car auctions on TV so we were surprised to learn that Bring A Trailer online auctions is the largest car auction house.  It beats Mecum, Sotheby’s, Barrett-Jackson, and Gooding among others.  So if you’re looking for a Buzzed Boomer era classic, check out bringatrailer.com.  Whether buying or selling, Bring A Trailer could possibly save you money versus the traditional houses.

Record Setting Records

The vinyl LP fad continues!  42 million sold last year.

We love our good old fashioned albums for nostalgia sake (yet we have to periodically explain why we still hang on to them.)  It’s just that we still remember the thrill when bands would release new albums and we’d crank them up on the parent’s hi-fi and eventually on our stereo.

Nowadays, Taylor Swift and Adele top the vinyl charts.  So Boomers, get out there and pick up a copy of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.  Pop out those AirPods and feel the music.  Share the music.  Remember how great that was!?

Raising the Bar

We like reading about seniors who enjoy catching a mellow Buzz. Residents at Marano Senior Living in downtown Seattle can not only partake in cocktails at the 24th floor Sea + Sky bar, they can learn to make them at a weekly Raising Spirits class instructed by bartender JB Van Horn. This uplifting news comes from a recent article in The Seattle Times’ Pacific NW magazine. Residents can also join cooking classes. What a nice way to add spirits and spice to retirement.

Dazed and Confused

“Today, we are in the midst of a “green” revolution where new strains of cannabis are being cultivated to produce desirable characteristics, unique traits, groundbreaking medical applications, and off-the-chart potency. And the quality and variety of strains available for the majestic flower of the female cannabis plant is astonishing. this dizzying array of hundreds, if not thousands, of cannabis strains can be an experienced toker’s dream or leave a novice user dazed and confused.” [Dazed and confused. That’s us.]

“How do we navigate through this modern marijuana landscape: What are the differences between various cannabis strains? Should we care whether we smoke an indica versus a sativa? What makes all these new hybrid strains so special?”

Green: A Field Guide to Marijuana by Dan Michaels is an excellent primer and reference. Read it and you’ll be a weed whiz.

As the book’s introduction goes on to say, “The difference between smoking a dank sinsemilla or some dry schwag (low grade) can mean the difference between feeling nice and lifted or feeling bugged out and paranoid.”

Here’s to feeling nice and lifted!
