Buzzed Boomer Captain Tony has made sure that visitors to his impressive shop don’t go thirsty. Inspired by Capt. Tony’s Saloon in Key West, Florida, our Captain Tony has outfitted his shop with everything needed to wet the whistle of visitors. Besides an old Coke cooler stocked with adult beverages, the Captain has refurbished an old Hotpoint refrigerator with wooden, sliding shelves to hold the hard liquor and supplies. We found some top shelf tequila on the bottom shelf, sat ourselves down at the game table, and hoisted a few toasts to Captain Tony’s Bar. Even birds will be able to frequent Captain Tony’s Bar when his hand-crafted model saloon birdhouse is placed outside. So thoughtful.
Everyone knows that marijuana users are more obese, due to the munchie factor, are lazy and lethargic, and do less exercise than non-users. Not so says a study published in the Journal of Health Economics and reported by marijuanamoment.net. Analyzing obesity data in Washington State, one of the first states to legalize marijuana, researches found a decrease in obesity rates. This was surprising given previous literature finding marijuana use is often associated with increased unhealthy food consumption and lethargy. Researchers note the study does not determine exactly why legalization seems to be linked to decreased obesity rates.
Another 2018 study concluded that the average marijuana user actually has a slimmer waistline compared to non-users. We have a theory for that one, based on zero research, and we describe it as the “beer-belly factor”. More weed, less beer. So you see we may have a point. It’s a stupid one. But it’s a point.
Founding Father Samuel Adams was born on this day in 1722 . More importantly, Samuel Adams is the flagship brand of the Boston Beer Company. And, yes, the brand name was chosen in honor of Founding Father of the United States Samuel Adams. Adams inherited his father’s brewery on King Street in Boston. Some historians say he was a brewer, while others describe him as a maltster (does it matter?)
A bit later (~1984), Jim Koch found his great great grandfather’s beer recipe in his dad’s attic and brewed his first batch in his kitchen. He truly led the way for today’s craft brew industry as he wanted to produce something better than what was available at the time.
“Beer, if drunk in moderation, softens the temper, cheers the spirit and promotes health.” – Thomas Jefferson
Sports tailgaters are a fun, inventive bunch. We love seeing bars built into the side of RVs or, better yet, hand-crafted works of invention and art. This hand-made beauty features pressurized beer taps and also breaks down to fit in through the RV’s door. A very practical consideration. Note the chalk board announcing what beers are on tap! Brilliant!
Buzzed Boomers will remember listening to music on their very own transistor radios. Often made in Japan, they were relatively inexpensive. Our first transistor radio had four transistors in it. Four. Those transistors and battery power allowed for a big leap in portability over tube radios.
Now hardware-maker Nvidia announces a processor unit with 77 billion transistors, meant to unify nearly all computer-controlled automation in self-driving vehicles. 77 billion?! Did someone count them?
The great Yogi Berra passed away on this day in 2015. American baseball player, manager, and coach Yogi, who won a record 10 World Series while a catcher with the New York Yankees and was known for his unintentionally amusing non sequiters, died at age 90. “It ain’t over till it’s over.”
On this day in 2004, the Bay Area band Green Day released its iconic American Idiot, which later won a Grammy Award for best rock album and was adapted into a rock opera.
We’re hoping for a new release titled Russian Idiot with which we will pair some fine French vodka. (BTW, Green Day cancelled their scheduled concert in Moscow this year.)
We just realized that September is National Self Improvement Month. But given that we’re getting such a late start, we’re going to tackle this one next year.
Watch us drink! Wait. That’s not quite what we read. It was “watch what you drink and still lose weight.” Insider.com suggests six delicious, low-calorie alcohol beverages.
Tequila with fresh lime, vodka and soda, light beer, Mojito minus the syrup, diet tonic with gin, and hard seltzer.
AARP reports that Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer, got mad at scammers and thieves. Scammers often target seniors. Now he is getting even in creative ways. For example, “The smash-and-grab thieves who are breaking car windows and stealing from the vehicles. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s really bad. I’ll be working potentially with some law enforcement. There will be a very uncharitable amount of fart spray involved.”
“The study followed 63 people who were randomly assigned a nature walk or an urban walk. The nature walk took place in a forest in Berlin and the urban walk took place on a busy street in the city.”
“Participants were instructed not to check their phones or stop in stores while on their walk.”
Obviously, this study could never be conducted in the United States.
According to National Day Calendar, September 14th is National Sober Day and also National Cream-Filled Donut Day. We’re confident we can nail the donut.
Health.com reported this, “The participants were followed for about 11 years, and researchers determined that people who drank at least two cups of tea per day had a 9%–13% lower risk of death from all causes, compared to people who did not drink tea at all.”
So add black tea to the beverages that offer some health benefits like coffee and green tea do. Plus water. And we’ll add tequila to those but not based on any facts or studies. We just like it.
