Detroit Rocks!

We read that Jack White, of the White Stripes band, got married on stage last Friday night in his hometown of Detroit. It seems like a lot of musical folks hail from Detroit so we took a look on the Interweb. Among the better know include Bob Sugar, Suzi Quatro, MC5, Aretha Franklin, The Stooges, Berry Gordy, Jackie Wilson, Rare Earth, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Alice Cooper, Eminem, Smokey Robinson, Martha and the Vandellas, Mary Wells, Ted Nugent, The Temptations, Four Tops, Diana Ross, Sonny Bono, and Wilson Pickett.

Pink floyd

After 28 years, Pink Floyd is releasing an original single today with proceeds to support the people of Ukraine via humanitarian relief. “Hey Hey Rise Up” features vocalist Andriy Khlyvnyuk of the Ukrainian band Boombox. He is currently in the hospital with shrapnel wounds suffered while serving with the Ukrainian army.

David Gilmour has a Ukrainian daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

More Smoke

A savvy Buzzed Boomer pointed us to a 1989 Smoke on the Water tribute/fundraiser featuring some classic rock stars including Brian May, Alex Lifeson, Tommy Iommi, Chris Squire, Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson, Paul Rogers, Keith Emerson, Geoff Downes, and Roger Taylor. Not a bad lineup. Enjoy.

University of Rock

We like the Beatles.  Great band.  Very influential and all that.  And for those who would like to dig a little deeper, there is now a Masters degree program at the University of Liverpool.

“The Beatles: Music Industry and Heritage.  This programme aims to reframe and extend contemporary discourse about the Beatles beyond the historical and musicological into a broader and more robust 21st-century context.”

So there you go.  International students in this one year course will need to pony up over 20,000 pounds for tuition. “You Never Give Me Your Money.” – Abbey Road

Crack those books.  Study hall.  All-nighters.  Midterms.  Finals.

Smoke on the Water

We’ve never been too adept at decifering symbolic rock lyrics, other than that they often refer to sex.  So it was nice when Deep Purple recorded Smoke on the Water and, as Parade magazine reports, the monster hit could not have been more literal. “Some stupid with a flare gun” burned the casino in Montreux, Switzerland near where Deep Purple was finishing up their Machine Head album, “to the ground”.  Guitarist Richie Blackmore said he based his iconic riff on Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.  Classic.

Scorpions! Here is Thy sting

Miss the ’80’s?  The Scorpions are back!  Apple Music reports, “A longtime friend—and diehard Scorpions fan—from Athens, Greece, encouraged them to write something in the anthemic, MTV-storming style of their ’80s classics Blackout and Love at First Sting. “He said this is what the fans want to hear from us,” lead singer Klaus Meine tells Apple Music. “We thought, well, that’s 40 years ago—come on! But he threw this challenge at us and then we decided, okay, let’s go for it.””

“The result is Rock Believer, their first new studio album in seven years, which recaptures their triumphant ’80s sound amazingly well.”  We agree.

Musician’s Buzz

Baby Boomers can benefit from playing a musical instrument to stimulate the brain and maybe kick out a few endorphins in the process.  We’re not too old to learn even if you’ve never played one before.

However, be aware that there are also significant risks to this hobby as family and friends may resort to violence especially when forced to listen to beginners.  We might as well scratch bongos and tambourine off the following list right away for your safety’s sake.  But these instruments are otherwise reasonably easy to learn.

  • The Piano
  • Harmonica
  • Ukulele
  • Guitar
  • Tambourine
  • Bongos
  • Recorder
  • Flute

We suggest wearing a helmet, to protect that newly stimulated brain, and a flak jacket.  Good luck and let’s rock!

Talkin’ ’bout My Generation

Huffpost reported this about the Super Bowl halftime show:

“Two generations are claiming the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show ― and some are getting just a touch testy over it.

The show featured instantly iconic performances from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Eminem and 50 Cent.

But it was a tweet about the event by NBC News that may have inadvertently kicked off an intergenerational feud as the network declared: “Super Bowl Halftime Show taps into millennial nostalgia.”

Millennials cheered, while Gen Xers (as apathetically as possible, of course) stepped in to contest the claim.

Each side has a solid argument.

All of the key performers except for Lamar are Gen Xers by age. But the bulk of the songs played were big hits during the formative years for many Millennials.

That led to some (mostly) good-natured discussions and jokes over which generation was best represented by the performance.”

We’re guessing most Baby Boomers are very happy to sit on the sidelines of this debate. We did like the classic cars, though!

The Ventures

Guitar World has reported that, “Don Wilson, co-founding rhythm guitarist of instrumental rock outfit The Ventures, has died aged 88.  A trailblazing instrumental rock group, The Ventures sold a staggering 100-million records during their decades-long tenure.

The band was formed in 1958 by Don Wilson and guitarist/bassist Bob Bogle, both construction workers at the time. Drummer Howie Johnson and guitarist Nokie Edwards joined shortly thereafter. While the group remains active to this day, Don Wilson was the last surviving founding member.

The Ventures enjoyed a string of hits, most notably including 1960’s Walk, Don’t Run. The track – which was originally written by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954, and later adapted and re-recorded by Chet Atkins in 1956 – was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2006 for its “lasting impact” on music.

The band’s other notable tracks include Wipeout, Perfidia and their cover of the Hawaii Five-0 theme song by Morton Stevens. The Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 by Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty.

Additionally, the band had a partnership with American guitar maker Mosrite, which yielded the brand’s flagship Ventures model. This electric guitar later grew to become revered in surf and punk circles, and remains a sought-after instrument to this day – Johnny Ramone’s Ventures II model sold at auction for $937,500 last year.”

Be My Baby

We weren’t the only ones who lusted after Ronnie Spector. John Lennon, David Bowie, and Keith Richards were ahead of us in line. Brian Wilson called Be My Baby the greatest pop recording ever made. Rest In Peace, Ronnie.

dive Bar Anthems

We’ve been known to yammer-on about missing listening to an entire album, or at least one side of the LP.  We still do it yet there’s certainly something to be said for playlists.  We just noticed Apple Music has one called Dive Bar.  American Girl, Back in Black, Folsom Prison Blues,  I Love Rock ’N Roll, etc.  Gets those endorphins going without any help.   With good, solid  Rock ’N Roll we can do without the Sex and Drugs.

Record Setting Records

The vinyl LP fad continues!  42 million sold last year.

We love our good old fashioned albums for nostalgia sake (yet we have to periodically explain why we still hang on to them.)  It’s just that we still remember the thrill when bands would release new albums and we’d crank them up on the parent’s hi-fi and eventually on our stereo.

Nowadays, Taylor Swift and Adele top the vinyl charts.  So Boomers, get out there and pick up a copy of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.  Pop out those AirPods and feel the music.  Share the music.  Remember how great that was!?

Rockin’ Nashville

Having had occasion to visit Nashville recently, we’re always curious which rock musicians have joined their country counterparts in taking up residence there.  Artists such as Billy Gibbons, Peter Frampton, Dave Mustaine, Steven Tyler, Brad Whitford, Tommy Shaw, Kip Winger, Bret Michaels, Kid Rock, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Tom Keifer, Tom Petersson, to name a handful make their home there.

While in Nashville, we also happened to read about the 50th Anniversary of George Harrison’s epic triple album All Things Must Pass.  Sound & Vision magazine noted that one of the musicians on the album was Nashville pedal steel guitar legend Pete Drake.  Small world except when you’re looking for the real pros, go to Nashville.
