Baseball playoffs are here and that calls for beer and/or special cocktails. Searching the InterWeb, there is a baseball-related drink for everyone out there but we wanted something simple. We wanted something we could make one-handed so as to leave a hand free to keep our lucky bat propped on the shoulder. The Home Run Highball fit the bill. Whiskey and ginger beer. Add ice. Done. Back to the game.
Reports VinePair, America loves to drink. According to a report from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Americans’ alcohol consumption reached 7.8 billion gallons in 2018. U.S. residents reportedly drank 6.3 billion gallons of beer, 900 million gallons of wine, and 570 million gallons of spirits. As a country, we drink an average of 2.35 gallons of alcohol per capita per year — which amounts to about 501 standard drinks annually.
Which state drinks the most per capita? Surprise! New Hampshire! And the least? No surprise. Utah.
But let’s remember that this isn’t a competition. Although, maybe it should be!
Founding Father Samuel Adams was born on this day in 1722 . More importantly, Samuel Adams is the flagship brand of the Boston Beer Company. And, yes, the brand name was chosen in honor of Founding Father of the United States Samuel Adams. Adams inherited his father’s brewery on King Street in Boston. Some historians say he was a brewer, while others describe him as a maltster (does it matter?)
A bit later (~1984), Jim Koch found his great great grandfather’s beer recipe in his dad’s attic and brewed his first batch in his kitchen. He truly led the way for today’s craft brew industry as he wanted to produce something better than what was available at the time.

You can still get free hot dogs with your beer at Rudy’s Bar & Grill in New York City. A classic dive bar with duct tape holding the seats together and superb drink specials like the Mexican Hat Dance, Rudy’s is a model for dive bars across America.
Two foreigners arrive in America for the first time, in New York City. They step out into the city and see a hot dog stand. One says to the other “wow – they eat dogs in America? Well I guess we should give it a try”. They each get a hot dog and sit down to eat. After a minute of just staring at his hot dog, one turns to the other and says “hey… what part did you get?”.

Watch us drink! Wait. That’s not quite what we read. It was “watch what you drink and still lose weight.” Insider.com suggests six delicious, low-calorie alcohol beverages.
Tequila with fresh lime, vodka and soda, light beer, Mojito minus the syrup, diet tonic with gin, and hard seltzer.
“One of the trends we have seen with this (Baby Boomer) age group,” says Liz Paquette, the head of consumer insights at Drizly, “is that they typically spend less per product, but more per order, than other generations.”
But we also learned we like premium wines. So we’re not totally cheap!
If it’s in Esquire magazine, it must be classy and right up our alley.
“Kalimotxo is a slow-burn kind of drink. Upon your first-ever sip, you’ll probably recoil at the taste, which can be accurately described as cherry cough syrup with Splenda. Or, for the 7/11 crowd, cherry Slurpee blended with Coke Slurpee. Mixing equal parts cheap red wine—the cheaper, the better, and if it’s from a box, bullseye—with Coca Cola doesn’t leave room for flavor nuance. But like most cheap and easy drinks, you’ll build up a tolerance and then a hearty appreciation. Soon enough, you’ll have reached fiery passion.”

“To make it, you could find dry Spanish wine instead of using the dregs of whatever bottle you uncorked two nights ago. You could measure out Coke with a jigger like a real asshole. You could slice off a lemon wedge to cut the sweetness. But the soul of Kalimotxo will always be cheap and easy, so don’t overthink it. In fact, underthink it. That’s the whole point.”
