Moscow Mule Conspiracy

Those Russians are at it again by trying to give us copper poisoning.  That’s right, copper mugs, like those often used to serve a Moscow Mule, and acidic drinks can be hazardous to your health.  In fact, according to Tasting Table, Iowa in 2017 issued an advisory against serving Moscow Mules in copper containers.  That said, “most people would need to down 30 mules in a day to reach dangerous levels. To stay on the safe side, opt for a glass. But if you really love the look of copper, you can find cups lined with nickel or stainless steel.”

Spring Fever

Spring is here and it’s time to break out the Spring cocktails. Liquor.com has a number of them here and we picked Spring Fever.

“This fruity floral cocktail from New York City drinks pro Jamie Steinberg tops a combination of strawberries, elderflower syrup, lemon juice, and rhubarb bitters with sparkling rosé wine. It’s exactly what you’ll want to be sipping on the first day of patio season.”

Ingredients

  • 6 medium-size strawberries, quartered
  • 3/4 ounce elderflower syrup
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 4 dashes rhubarb bitters
  • 3 ounces sparkling rosé wine, chilled, to top
  • Garnish: lemon wheel

Steps

-Add the strawberries, elderflower syrup, lemon juice and bitters into a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.
-Strain into a wine glass over fresh ice.
-Top with the sparkling rosé.
-Garnish with a lemon wheel.

    Retirement Cocktail

    A good friend recently announced his retirement. That got us wondering (online) about great retirement cocktails. We found many many. And ANY of them will do but we liked Adios, Muchachos the best. Not so much the cocktail. Just the sentiment. Goodbye, boys!!

    Adios, Muchachos

    1. Line up a highball, rocks or collins glass.
    2. Create sour mix using one-part freshly squeezed lemon juice and one-part simple syrup — a mix of sugar and water.
    3. Add 30 millilitres of sour mix.
    4. Add 30 millilitres of blue curacao, which is an orange-flavoured blue liqueur.
    5. Add 15 millilitres of blanco tequila.

    Valentine’s Day Champagne Cocktail.  Sparkling!  Check.  Pink!  Check.  Fancy Chambord liqueur!  Check.  Romantic!  Check.  Emergen-C 1,000 mg Vitamin C Raspberry Flavored Fizzy Drink Mix!  Sad but true.  We immediately thought, “Hey, we can make this a little bit healthy!”  Don’t do what we do.     Shirley Temples

    We’re reading that lots of restaurants are adding non-alcoholic cocktails to their menus.  We suppose that’s good, though it seems there’s a lot of sugary concocutions out there that cost about the same as a real cocktail.  Exotic Shirley Temples.  We did try an Athletic IPA at a bar recently and we found it to do the trick.  Tasted like an IPA and even lacked some of the bitterness.   During Dry January every little bit helps so we suppose the words we’re looking for are “thank you”.  One more day!

    “As the new year approaches, you might be thinking about buying a bottle of champagne to ring it in with a celebratory “pop.” But the climate crisis could ruin the party, new data suggests.

    The three grapes used in almost all champagne — chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier — are among hundreds on the brink of extinction, according to Silicon Valley startup ClimateAi, which shared data insights with CNN. That’s because the human-caused climate crisis is warming and altering weather patterns in some of the world’s best-known wine-growing regions, including Champagne in northern France.

    By 2050, these popular grape varieties may cease to exist.”

    Martha Says….

    Drink Bombs

    Nobody ever accused us of going the extra mile to create elaborate cocktails.  Even more troubling, we’ve resisted the cocktail machines that virtually automate cocktail concocting.  But now it looks like there’s a simple solution.  Drink Bombs.  Drop a little ball into sparkling water and add alcohol.  Presto.  There’s fun options like mimosas, margaritas, mojitos, piña coladas, peach bellinis, and strawberry margaritas.  Have we tried them?  Of course not!  But if you were searching for a gift idea for us, well, here you go.  Available from Uncommon Goods.

    Show Your Colors

    It’s nice to have food and drink to compliment your favorite sports teams.  To celebrate the Pac-12 Championship game and the University of Washington Huskies, whose colors are purple and gold, here’s a Purple and Gold cocktail from Seattle’s Heritage Distillery.  

    (That said, we sometimes keep things simple come game time by serving Empress Gin martinis.  The gin is purple so it’s really easy to chill and pour.  Touchdown!)

    Here’s the Purple and Gold from Heritage:

    Cheer on the UW Huskies with this powerfully purple cocktail! The Purple & Gold 2 oz HDC Lavender Vodka 1/2 oz Raft Vanilla Simple Syrup 3 Lemon Wedges In a shaker, muddle 3 lemon wedges and Raft vanilla syrup. Add HDC Lavender Vodka and ice and shake for 10 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass and enjoy!
