Elegant Travel

We recently visited Denver’s Union Station where we enjoyed adult beverages at the Terminal Bar and also the Cooper Lounge. It was nice to be reminded that the US of A still has some classic train stations if not the classic trains themselves. At the Cooper Lounge we sampled their Cooper Lounge Manhattan which offered a choice of four single barrel whiskeys. We chose the Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye. It did not disappoint. While we sipped, we compared the elegance of train travel at its height versus today’s cattle car airplane travel. Make American Trains Great Again! Then fix air travel. Thx.

Gut Feeling

Most people lose weight on Ozempic.  That’s good.  They tend to eat less while also eating healthier foods.  Researchers are studying how that works and Prevention reported some of their findings.  First, Ozempic works on the brain to suppress appetite.  It also slows digestions so one feels full longer.  Folks injecting drug tend to listen to their doctors who recommend healthier foods.  Where it starts to hit home is that high-fat and high-starch foods can lead to nausea… or worse.  Finally, we think that anyone sticking themselves with a needle is motivated to make it work.

Zip In Your Step

We read that regular exercise is essential to good health as we age. But who has time for exercise? Even when retired! Exercise gets in the way of everything fun. Well, the Washington Post reports that there is good news. Just picking up the pace while doing chores, climbing stairs or doing yard work can cut the risk of heart attack and stroke in half! Researchers, who sit idle for hours in front of a computer, have determined that vigorous bits for as little as 5 minutes a day make a big difference. A moderate pace for a half-hour or so has similar benefits. Obviously, picking up the pace AND doing some exercise is best. But it’s nice to know that small changes to habits can have meaningful health results. So give a vigorous push when slinging back the La-Z-Boy.

A Titanic Cocktail

Besides being tax day, April 15th is national Titanic Remembrance Day.  An appropriate beverage with which to raise a toast would be a popular and well-known beverage served on the Titanic.  Punch à la Romaine is a rum-based, shaved-ice palate cleanser. It was served between courses as a palate cleanser and was a favorite, particularly among first-class passengers.

Recipe

Instructions

Add all ingredients except champagne to a shaker and shake without ice Add ice and shake a gain Strain into a cocktail glass filled with shaved ice Top with champagne

    Par For The Course

Seattle-native Fred Couples showed us Buzzed Boomers that Azelia cocktails really work.  Couples flagged down one of the cute cart girls on the Master’s course at Augusta, steadied his nerves with the refreshing beverage and then went on to par the course on Thursday… something only one other senior player (Tom Watson) has ever done.  The 65 year old, despite making an eagle and finishing at par, is tied for 11th going into Friday’s round.  Tough crowd.  Here’s the Azelia recipe from Golf.com:

“-Pour 2 oz good vodka (or gin if you prefer), 2 oz pineapple juice, 1 oz lemon juice (not lemonade)* and a spoonful of grenadine into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

-Shake, shake, shake, then pour through a strainer into a tall glass filled halfway with rocks.

-Note: A lemon garnish on your Azalea is lovely. Just don’t use actual azalea leaves — they’re highly toxic.”

And, no, Fred didn’t really down an Azelia before playing his round. But we will.

    Smoking Through The Gloom

If you happened to think about tariffs and the cost of weed, well, you’re not smoking enough.  When the smoke clears, at first glance, tariffs shouldn’t affect weed prices because legal weed is all grown in the good-old US of A.  Except the fertilizers, like peat and compost, come from Canada.  And a lot of the paraphernalia comes from countries like China.  So prices for legal weed will likely go up making illegal weed more attractive while lowering tax revenue and putting more pressure on state budgets forcing cuts to essential services.  Pass the bong, please.

    It IS A Sprint

We try to keep up with news about coffee, tea and caffeine, in particular.  Usually, the news is good.  But every now and then we find a cautionary bit.  And thus, some folks who care for the elderly are finding that decaf coffee can reduce falls!  How, you may ask?  Well, caffeine is a diuretic and diuretics can cause us to visit the lavatory more often and sometimes with more urgency.  And then we fall down. So the moral of the story is… don’t read the news.
