Great atmosphere, professional bartender, handy taco food truck…. Suzie Wong’s dive bar has it all. Buried in an alley not far from the high-end stores of Waikiki, Suzie’s is a refuge from the high-rise excess. A true Hideaway. It does get busy but Dean handles the crowd with practiced efficiency. PBR $4.95 all day. (Note: They keep the nickel). It’s Man versus Mai Tai.
We dropped into our local community’s annual 007 Speakeasy Crawl recently. Organizers created six hidden bars in the backs of businesses or where you wouldn’t ordinarily expect to find a bar. Like in an animal-feed store. Starting in a sketchy alley, we followed the clues from one crowded speakeasy to another. All offered a choice of two cocktails with catchy names like Aston Martin (vodka martini), Heartbreaker (Negroni), and Skyfall Sour (bourbon and lemon). 007 posters adorned many of the walls. One stop offered a lively game of Craps. We will be back for the sequel next year.
When a bright green t-shirt arrived from Key West’s Dive Bar Shirt Club, we were surprised to find it celebrated Lucky Liquor right in our own greater-Seattle back yard. We’d driven by the bar hundreds of times without stopping but now we had to check it out. It did not disappoint. We were taken care of by Mitch the bartender who was ultra-patient with our questions including what was in a Sex on the River cocktail. We met Aaron the owner and were advised about the delicious food offerings, e.g. grass-fed beef burgers and pineapple fritters, by patrons Zach and Possum. Don’t skip the fritters. We’re told there’s live music and it’s only a short drive to The Museum of Flight. Check out the dive bombers.
