No Rest for Broken Bones

Buzzed Boomers who drink and fall, or just fall, and break a hip or whatever are all around us. Or are us. So we were interested to read here in Scientific American that putting some weight on those breaks sooner than we may think can save lives. “The lack of movement leads to serious problems such as blood clots and weakening of the lungs. One 2005 study found that nine percent of hip fracture patients died within 30 days of breaking a hip and that 30 percent died within the first year.” Now, our advice is to not fall and not break bones. But we’re not scientists.

Not Quite So Dry

Yeah, Dry January was a bit depressing. For retired Buzzed Boomers, those adult beverages are an important part of socializing. And socializing is an important part of staying healthy. So we were pleased to read about a study that concluded a small amount of alcohol some days, emphasize small, might be beneficial to mood and well-being. Spreading it out over the week, using light mixers, choosing light beer, avoiding salt and sugary cocktails, drinking water alongside…. all are key to keeping the pros from outweighing the cons. The usual…. Moderation. But it’s a lot more fun than Dry.

Lay An Egg

Our New Year’s resolutions include ingesting more protein. Like that found in eggs. Remember when eggs were bad? Then they were good. Then they were expensive. Then they weren’t. And now they’re expensive again.

Which came first, the chicken or the road? We’re looking forward to getting on the other side of this scrambled mess. We’re eggs-austed!

Obesity Drugs Are Painful

Where do they hurt? In the wallet. Around 65% of folks taking drugs like Ozempic quit within a year. Not because they don’t work or because of side effects. It’s because they’re expensive, like a grand a month, and most health insurance doesn’t cover them for weight loss. For diabetes, they generally do.

The policy is likely penny-wise and pound-foolish because the cost of obesity has got be enormous. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, broken chairs.

Someone do something about it! Thanks.
